Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) is one of the main protagonists of the show along with his brother Dean who is four years older. Sam was fed demon blood when he as just a baby at about 6 months old by the demon Azazel. Sam is a hunter along with his brother he is also part of the nearly extinct group called the men of letters. With his relation to Abel and Cain, Sam is suppossed to be a vessel for Lucifer. He is the more reluctuctant of the brothers to get involved in being a hunte, he also dosent like to kill if he dosent absolutly have to. Sam more then his brother is willing to believe that god is real and he also somewhat willing to believe in fate. Sam can be considerd to be the good brother but becuase of the demon blood in his system he also has a bit of a dark side.

Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) is one of the two protagonists on supernatural, he is Sam Winchester's older brother. Just like Sam he is also a hunter and a member of the men of letters group. Also like Sam he is also related to Abel and Cain making him a vessel for the archangel Michael. Dean has always been the protector and guardian of his brother, he tries to sheild his brother from danger among other things. Dean may come across as being not as nice as his brother but that is mostly becuase he can be little less caring and saracstic. In the overall context of the show Dean is considered to be one of the good guys but he also has had dark side to him. Dean can also be considerd evil at certain points in the show especially when he was killed by the angel Metatron while wearing the Mark of Cain. When he got killed wearing the Mark he turned into a demon, and it took his brother getting him purifed blood to put him back to normal. Dean unlike his brother is more skeptical of god's existence and believes that people make their own fate.

Castiel (Misha Collins) is an angel and a good friend of the Winchesters, the character helped introduce Christian theology in season 4. Castiel is constantly helping the brothers defeat various monsters, demons as well as angels. He has also brought Dean back from hell. Being an angel means that he has some special abilities such as being able to kill demons. When Castiel first appears in the show is much like the other angels with no emotions and a full devotion to god. Through his interactions with the Winchesters and his short time as a human, Castiel develops some emotions and also realises some things about his fellow angels and god. As a result of all this Castiel becomes a more human like character complete with a will of his own. This character can be considerd to be more of a good guy especially because he is diffrent then the other angels, and also becuase he helps out the Winchesters often.

Crowley (Mark A. Sheppard) is a powerful demon and is now the King of hell, he previuosly was a king of crossroads and was lilliths right hand man. Crowley is first inroduced in the middle of the fifth season of the show when he helped the Winchester's in thier plan to kill lucifer and later to retrap him. Over the course of the last five seasons Crowley is constantly switching between helping the Winchesters and fighting them. With the Character going from helping to fighting he is probably the character that most often switches his role from being the antagonist to a kind of anit-hero. At one point in the show Crowley helps Dean transition to being a demon, during that time the two characters become somewhat close. Crowley is mostly considerd to be the main evil charcter but he also shows features occasionally of a good side.
